Analyzing the Self

I believe that self plays an important role into my identity in an online class. “The individual is likely to present himself in a light that is favorable to him” (45). I believe that an online class allows us more control over how we present ourselves. In the normal world we may attempt to display ourselves in a certain way, but daily activities and occurrences may bring out our true character. In an online class we are restricted from seeing how each other react to real world situations and are more likely to present false images of ourselves. I don’t believe an online class can allow for people to truly get to know each other.

I believe that an online class can offer ways to get to know certain elements of a person. An online class offers anonymity, which could allow some people to escape out of their shell. Anonymity can allow some people to be as truthful as possible. This is the reasoning behind anonymous evaluation cards. Anonymity can also lead some people to act aggressive in conversations and debates that they wouldn’t normally speak out in.

I think that an online class can be positive and negative. Without physical interaction, we not reduced to making stereotypes about people. Our “first impression” about people is usually through the observation of physical appearance. Our first impression in an online class is through our statements which I believe is a better way to judge people. No physical contact in an online class increases the chance that we will not keep in contact with each other after the class is over. Online friendships and relationships that originate on the internet are looked down upon in our society and therefore discourage from establishing these kinds of relationships.

  1. Hi Justin! My name is Morgan and we will apparently be communicating throughout the semester via our blogs. I love your picture at the top! You seem like a very care-free and easy going guy. As far as this post goes, I was very impressed by how you touched on how our society views online communication and relationships.
I look forward to reading more throughout the semester!
